Doctor Who and the Masque of Mandragora - Philip Hinchcliffe

With the season ending of the Dr. Who television series, I thought I would keep the Dr. Who spirit alive by reading a Dr. Who book.

I picked Doctor Who and the Masque of Mandragora. Having never read a Dr. Who book before I didn't know what to expect. I have to say I was a bit disappointed in the writing. The television series is way better!

I can't really pinpoint the problem with the book except to say I didn't feel for the characters. The Doctor was okay but not compelling. Sarah was a bit flat. The rest of the characters had more of an edge which helped keep me interested in the book. There were the usual good guys, bad guys and ones in between.

In this particular case, the Mandragora Helix was the ultimate culprit by attempting to use a magic cult and it's worshippers to take over the Earth and rule it through their chosen servants. Fortunately for us, the Doctor saved the day. Unfortunately, he didn't keep me interested while doing so.

I'm sure if you're a huge Dr. Who fan you'll love this book. For me though, it just didn't work.
