Book Review

When I first picked up this book I wasn't sure if I could handle reading about a mystery set in Vancouver. I'd lived there for many years and wondered if the location would be authentic. As well, I'm a big "detective" fan and find mysteries that don't have a lot of "detection" in them to be frankly, boring.

So I was pleasantly surprised when I read Lorna's book. First of all, it is a mystery. Not a "detective" mystery, but a mystery none the less. The mystery is about a young prostitute, Lola, who is found murdered. Prior to Lola's death, Lola visits Intuko a street minister, and asks him to take care of her daughter, Sarah, should anything happen to her. Unfortunately, Lola ends up dead and the mystery begins.

Intuko, takes it upon himself to find out why and who killed Lola. He also keeps his promise to Lola by finding and taking care of Sarah. During Intuko's search for Lola's killer, Intuko unravels more than a mystery. He comes to terms with his Inuit upbringing, his position as a minister and his search for love.

The Inuit theme is refreshing and Nicholson looks at the historical aspect of Christianity being forced upon native Indians. Without applauding or condemning either side. The characters are rich and vibrant. They are real. I could picture Intuko, the street people of lower east side Vancouver and all the other characters. Each character was flawed in one way or another and each was trying to work through their issues. The location description of Vancouver was accurate and I could picture the exact spots Nicholson mentioned.

This book is a well thought out, moving characterization of people and their search for belonging. It's filled with believable characters, authentic feelings and emotions. I'm glad Nicholson is writing a sequel because I can't wait to find out what happens to the characters next!
